Morena internal selection & candidate vetting (July 2026)
Entities: Ariadna Montiel · Luz Ma. Hernández · Morena (Mexico)
Overview
Morena’s internal selection drive continues to expand across Mexico. State‑level grassroots assemblies are proceeding in Sonora, Cozumel and other regions as part of the nationwide “Assemblies in Defense of the Sovereignty” program. The party’s coordination race for the Defence of the Transformation and Sovereignty National sees candidates such as Andy López Beltrán, Bernardo Bosch, Graciela Domínguez, Tere Guerra Ochoa and Milena Quiroga touring states like Tabasco, Sinaloa and Baja California Sur, emphasizing accountability and a level playing field.
In late July, additional Morena aspirants traveled through Michoacán and Sinaloa, meeting residents in Zamora, La Piedad, Taximácuaro, Concordia, Rosario and Mazatlán. They highlighted agriculture, youth employment and defence of national sovereignty, while also participating in a reforestation activity in Tlaxcala. Opposition PAN figures also conducted local tours, underscoring the broader political outreach ahead of upcoming internal selections.
The party’s vetting process, originally outlined by Ariadna Montiel Reyes, is being reinforced. New selection rules announced for the State of Mexico and nationally require candidates to provide evidence of political trajectory, ethical conduct and party alignment, undergo background and criminal‑record checks, and sign commitment letters pledging compliance. The guidelines stress legality, transparency, zero tolerance for nepotism and a uniform evaluation based on surveys, probity and municipal performance.
Strategically, Morena remains in talks with the PT and PVEM for coalitions in 16 of the 17 governorships up for election in 2027, while internal mayoral polls show incumbents in Iztapalapa and Gustavo A. Madero holding strong leads.
