Zenyazen Escobar: Mexican Federal Deputy found dead in Veracruz

Federal Deputy Zenyazen Escobar García was found dead on September 4 inside his vehicle on the Xalapa-Veracruz highway near La Gloria, Puente Nacional. The 42-year-old legislator, a former Secretary of Education for Veracruz and a member of the Morena party, was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head and a firearm located between his legs.

The investigation has been assumed by the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR). Governor Rocío Nahle reported that the vehicle was locked from the inside and that only one shot was fired, though authorities are still analyzing ballistic evidence and security camera footage to reconstruct his final movements. While some officials have suggested the possibility of self-inflicted injury, local reports have noted potential inconsistencies regarding the position of the weapon and the victim's handedness.

Ricardo Monreal, president of the Chamber of Deputies' Political Coordination Board, confirmed that the legislature will monitor the FGR's progress but stated that a special investigative commission has not been established. A memorial service for Escobar is scheduled to take place at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace on September 9. The death has caused significant political mourning and heightened concerns regarding security and impunity in the state of Veracruz.
