Following an investigation, the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) concluded that the death was a suicide. Authorities noted the vehicle was parked by the roadside with the doors locked and showed no signs of external ballistic impact or struggle, supporting the suicide finding. However, officials noted that homicide has not been entirely ruled out due to high levels of violence and gang activity in Veracruz.

Prior to his death, investigations linked Escobar García to an alleged corruption and nepotism network involving a waste management monopoly, specifically the ‘Los Colorines’ regional sanitary landfill in Nogales, Veracruz, operated by a company managed by his daughter. President Claudia Sheinbaum had previously called for updates from the FGR. Escobar was laid to rest in Río Blanco, and a memorial service was held at the San Lázaro Legislative Palace on September 9.
