Mexican designers gain international recognition for cultural works
Mexican designers are gaining international recognition for works that blend traditional cultural elements with modern design.
Laura Segundo González, from Jocotitlán, State of Mexico, secured second place in the professional category of the National Catrinas de Mezclilla y Barro Contest. Her creation, ‘Raíces Eternas’, combines fashion and craftsmanship and will be exhibited at the La Fête des Morts à Paris festival from October 20 to November 1. The project involved artisan Leonardo Daniel Villa Sandoval and model Ximena Macedo.
In Sonora, designer Jimena Elías won first place in the Diseño Promesas México 2026 competition for ‘Los Bailadores’. The project features stainless steel sugar bowls inspired by the traditional dances and architectural elements of Arizpe. The design incorporates a rotating mechanism modeled after the movements of dancers. Following its presentation in Guadalajara, the project was selected for exhibition at Milano Design Week 2025 in Italy.
