Mexican electoral tribunals dismiss gender-based political violence claims

Electoral tribunals in Mexico have ruled against allegations of political violence against women in two separate cases.

In Mexico City, the Electoral Tribunal of Mexico City (TECM) determined that no infractions occurred regarding community leader Kanek Zacarías. The ruling follows a complaint filed by Tláhuac Mayor Berenice Hernández, who alleged that Zacarías used TikTok videos to conduct a systematic campaign of discredit and psychological violence. The Mayor had claimed the videos questioned her political capacity and portrayed her as lacking autonomy. The tribunal ordered the determination to be notified to the Mexico City Electoral Institute.

In Jalisco, the Electoral Tribunal of the State of Jalisco unanimously ruled that Víctor Manuel Amador Ramos, the syndic of Ameca, did not commit political violence against women. The decision addressed a complaint by councilwoman Vanessa Velasco Castellón regarding the lack of a meeting convocatoria for a municipal commission. While the tribunal acknowledged that the omission affected the commission's institutional participation, it found no evidence that the conduct was directed at the councilwoman due to her gender or that it utilized gender-based stereotypes.
