Mexican health authorities urge measles vaccinations before school year

Health authorities in the Mexican states of Jalisco and Michoacán are urging parents to complete vaccination schedules for children before the start of the 2026-2027 school year to prevent disease outbreaks.

In Jalisco, the Secretary of Health reported 6,754 measles cases in 2026 as of August 25, contributing to a total of 7,490 cases between 2025 and 2026. Officials emphasized that classrooms and close-contact environments can facilitate virus transmission. The department confirmed that vaccines are available for free in all municipalities through various health units, including the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).

Similarly, the Secretary of Health of Michoacán highlighted the importance of the SRP vaccine (measles, rubella, and mumps) for children aged one to six, noting that two doses are required for effective protection. Authorities reminded citizens that basic vaccination schemes, including those for tuberculosis, hepatitis B, and rotavirus, are provided free of charge at local health centers.
