Mexican land disputes ignite claims of illegal dispossession

In the Yucatán municipality of Baca, ejidatarios assert that more than 100 hectares of communal land were illegally seized after they sold the parcels legally. The dispute involves nine ejido groups and a businessman who purchased a plot and later faced threats from alleged claimants. The Tribunal Unitario Agrario nullified the original land allocations, citing procedural violations and alleged manipulation by an ejido adviser.

In Campeche's Hopelchén region, the Mennonite community of La Nueva Trinidad warns it will sue the state over a presumed expropriation of 500 hectares. State Secretary of Government Víctor Sarmiento Maldonado pledged to protect the community's rights and urged reliance on the judicial system, noting that the case has been reviewed by the state’s highest court. Both incidents highlight ongoing tensions over land ownership and legal processes in Mexico's agrarian sectors.
