Overview

In mid‑July 2026, reports emerged from Yucatán of alleged illegal eviction attempts on two private residences—a 69‑year‑old elder in Hunucmá and a homeowner in the Jardines de Satélite neighborhood. Both individuals faced threats of losing their homes over disputed loans or claims of ownership, prompting them to seek police and legal assistance.

A few days later, the focus broadened to larger agrarian conflicts. In the Baca municipality, ejidatarios said more than 100 ha of communal land had been seized after legitimate sales, while a Mennonite community in Campeche warned of a 500‑ha expropriation. Government officials cited judicial review and promised protection of rights.

By August 2026, the situation escalated into active law enforcement operations. In Mérida, authorities evicted occupants from property belonging to the Instituto de Vivienda del Estado de Yucatán (IVEY), despite protests from those removed. In the coastal area of Celestún, three individuals were arrested for alleged land dispossession after occupying a private plot for approximately one year. Legal representatives in the Celestún case have alleged that the local Mayor and Municipal Secretary provided the suspects with documents intended to falsely prove ownership. This incident is linked to a broader pattern of land invasions in the coastal zone that reportedly began in May 2025.
