Sergio Mayer resigns irrevocably from Mexico's Morena party

Federal deputy and actor Sergio Mayer submitted an irrevocable resignation from the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) on 15 May 2026. In a letter addressed to the party’s National Executive Committee, its Commission of Honesty and Justice, and the National Electoral Institute, he invoked article 40‑J of the Political Parties Law, cited “diverse personal reasons,” and requested immediate removal from the party register and deletion of his personal data.

Mayer’s departure follows months of controversy after he took an indefinite legislative leave to compete in the reality‑television program “La Casa de los Famosos.” The party’s internal disciplinary body suspended his partisan rights, arguing that his TV participation damaged Morena’s image. Despite the sanction, Mayer returned to his congressional seat before resigning from the party. He has not indicated whether he will sit as an independent or join another formation.

The resignation concludes a dispute that highlighted tensions between elected officials’ media activities and party discipline within Mexico’s ruling coalition.
