Mexico Chamber of Deputies approves single nationality reform for top executives
The Mexican Chamber of Deputies has approved a constitutional reform that mandates exclusive Mexican nationality for candidates seeking the Presidency, state governorships, and the Head of Government of Mexico City. The initiative, proposed by President Claudia Sheinbaum, modifies Articles 82, 116, and 122 of the Constitution.
Under the new rules, candidates holding a second nationality must formally renounce it before registering for office. Once in power, incumbents are prohibited from acquiring new nationalities, using foreign passports, or seeking foreign diplomatic protection. Failure to comply with these requirements could lead to removal from office via political trial or impeachment.
The reform is not retroactive and will not affect current officeholders. It is scheduled to take effect starting with the 2028 electoral process. While supporters argue the measure protects national sovereignty and prevents foreign interference, opposition legislators contend it infringes upon the political rights of Mexican citizens living abroad.
