Mexican Mayors React to Morena 2027 Candidate Process

Mayor Ana Paty Peralta of Benito Juárez (Cancún) announced she will request a temporary leave of absence to take part in Morena’s internal selection for the 2027 elections, stressing she will not resign permanently. She refuted rumors of an immediate departure, saying the license could last about two months while the party’s internal timetable is set.

In contrast, Othón P. Blanco mayor Yensunni Martínez Hernández stated that municipal directors who wish to run must resign outright, rejecting any temporary licenses. She emphasized that councilors may request leave under the law, but the administration will not allocate public resources to support candidates. Martínez also ruled out her own candidacy for 2027, though she remains open to other public roles.
