Mexico faces extreme heat and widespread rains amid tropical wave

The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional warned of more than 40 hours of strong to very strong rains across much of Mexico, with possible hail, thunderstorms and wind gusts up to 45‑50 km/h. States expected to receive the heaviest totals include Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, Chiapas and parts of the northwest such as Sonora, Chihuahua and Sinaloa.

Simultaneously, a heat wave is pushing temperatures to record levels: Mexicali recorded 48 °C, while Hermosillo, Nuevo Laredo and other municipalities forecast sensations of 45‑50 °C. State civil protection agencies issued preventive alerts and launched hydration operatives, setting up water stations, shelters and medical aid in parks, plazas and UNE clinics. Residents were urged to stay hydrated, avoid midday sun, wear light clothing and keep children, elders and pets out of vehicles.

Tropical wave 20 is expected to be absorbed by a low‑pressure system, while a new wave may affect the Yucatán peninsula later in the week, sustaining the combined threat of rain and intense heat.
