Mexican municipalities report drops in vehicle theft and launch joint security operations
In Toluca, four people were detained in separate operations targeting motorcycle theft and drug possession, with two stolen motorcycles recovered and doses of crystal and marijuana seized. The neighboring municipalities of Ecatepec and Tecámac began a joint security deployment, deploying 52 units, 280 officers, two drones and four K‑9 teams to patrol border areas and curb vehicle robbery, public‑transport assaults and homicides.
Cuautitlán Izcalli reported an 18% decline in vehicle‑theft cases from January to May 2026 compared with the same period in 2025, a reduction attributed to coordinated actions among the National Guard, the Secretariat of National Defense, state security agencies and municipal police. In Ciudad Victoria, Mayor Eduardo Gattás highlighted that the new state‑level military quarter and coordinated security strategy eliminated the “unwritten curfew” that had limited movement in 2021, leading to a calmer city and revived investment. Tecolutla also appointed a new director of municipal police to strengthen local security and public‑order measures.
