Mexican municipal police confront protests after alleged misconduct
In the town of San Lorenzo Chiautzingo, Puebla, a municipal police patrol was set on fire after the vehicle ran over a woman in the San Esteban neighborhood. Residents demanded that mayor María del Carmen Palestino Cordero appear and address the incident, accusing her of poor governance and a lack of public works.
Separately, in the municipality of La Paz, authorities filmed police officers from patrol SPM‑314 allegedly stealing fuel and distributing cash. The video sparked community calls for greater oversight of the local police force, which has faced multiple accusations of corruption, including a recent assault by a La Paz officer on a street‑vendor.
Both incidents highlight rising tension between Mexican municipal police units and the neighborhoods they serve, with citizens demanding accountability and transparency.
