Mexican municipalities ramp up animal welfare programs
Municipal governments across Mexico are expanding animal‑welfare initiatives. In Saltillo, the mayor delivered 220 kg of food to a local rescue shelter, while Puebla is constructing a state‑level "Cell of Animal Welfare and Protection" that will include veterinary surgery rooms, rehabilitation labs and an ecological crematory. The city of Puebla also announced a "Michi Fest" with free vaccination, sterilisation and adoption services. In the State of Mexico, a new animal‑protection law imposes fines up to 700 days of salary and prison terms for cruelty, and calls for dedicated animal‑wellness centers and school education programmes. Tijuana authorities rescued and re‑located more than 20 stray dogs after a raid, and the local prosecutor’s office continues investigations into alleged abuse. Rio Grande (Argentina) and several Mexican towns are holding free antirabies vaccination, micro‑chipging and adoption events. Similar free sterilisation campaigns are scheduled in the Valle de Aburrá (Colombia) and other regional municipalities, aiming to control pet populations and reduce abandonment.
