Mexican political figures announce candidacies and debate nepotism
Political activity is intensifying in Mexico as various figures prepare for upcoming electoral processes and internal party decisions. In Zacatecas, federal deputy José Narro Céspedes announced his intention to seek the municipal presidency of the capital through Morena’s internal processes. His move follows a reconciliation with Verónica Díaz Robles and the decision of the Frente Popular de Lucha de Zacatecas to join the Morena project.
Simultaneously, controversy has emerged regarding potential nepotism in Zacatecas. Senator Saúl Monreal Ávila has registered to contend for the municipal coordination in Fresnillo, a move his brother, Ricardo Monreal, defended by stating that no member of the Monreal family currently governs that municipality. Other local deputies with ties to Governor David Monreal Ávila have also registered for municipal roles in Guadalupe and Calera.
In Chihuahua, Morena coordinator Cuauhtémoc Estrada criticized the rejection of several open parliament requests regarding the Autonomous Prosecutor initiative, calling for better mechanisms for citizen participation. Meanwhile, Alfonso Ramírez Cuéllar is promoting a national meeting to improve urban services, security, and water management through better coordination between different levels of government.
