Mexico's PVEM and PT distance themselves from political controversies

Political tensions are rising in Mexico as the Green Party (PVEM) and Labor Party (PT) distance themselves from several recent controversies. In Zacatecas, the PVEM has expelled three deputies—Lyndiana Bugarín Cortés, Fernanda Miranda Herrera, and José Luis González Orozco—after they voted with Morena to approve an electoral reform. The PVEM describes the move as a “betrayal” that undermines minority representation by changing how proportional representation seats are assigned.

Separately, leaders of the PVEM and PT have expressed a neutral stance regarding the revocation of the U.S. visa belonging to Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former President López Obrador. PVEM coordinator Carlos Puente Salas stated that López Beltrán is “just another Mexican” without a political office, while PT coordinator Reginaldo Sandoval Flores noted that while they support the right to seek explanations from the U.S. government, they “will not put our hands in the fire” for anyone.

In Ciudad Victoria, Morena deputy Katalyna Méndez Cepeda has signaled a willingness to reconcile with PVEM leader Manuel Muñoz Cano. The tension stemmed from previous comments made by Muñoz Cano that Méndez Cepeda characterized as sexist, but she has since expressed a desire to move past personal grievances to focus on regional political agreements.
