Mexican political parties distancing from allies
Overview
The Green Ecological Party of Mexico (PVEM) has taken steps to distance itself from specific individuals associated with political alliances. In Michoacán, the party issued an institutional statement separating its official stance from the personal decisions and actions of Deputy Xóchitl Gabriela Ruiz González. The PVEM clarified that Ruiz González, a former member of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), joined the parliamentary group through a strategic agreement rather than formal party affiliation and is considered an ally rather than a member.
Subsequently, the PVEM and the Labor Party (PT) distanced themselves from Andrés Manuel López Beltrán following the revocation of his United States visa. PVEM coordinator Carlos Puente Salas stated that López Beltrán is a private citizen without political office, leaving it to the Morena party to establish a position. Similarly, PT coordinator Reginaldo Sandoval Flores noted his party would not guarantee López Beltrán’s innocence and called for an explanation from the United States government regarding the visa cancellation.
Furthering this trend of political distancing, the PVEM expelled three deputies in Zacatecas—Lyndiana Bugarín Cortés, Fernanda Miranda Herrera, and José Luis González Orozco—after they voted with Morena to approve an electoral reform. The PVEM characterized this action as a “betrayal” that undermines minority representation by altering the assignment of proportional representation seats.
In Ciudad Victoria, a potential reconciliation has emerged between Morena deputy Katalyna Méndez Cepeda and PVEM leader Manuel Muñoz Cano. Despite previous friction caused by comments from Muñoz Cano that Méndez Cepeda characterized as sexist, she has expressed a desire to move past personal grievances to focus on regional political agreements.
