Mexican peso appreciates to 18.09 per US dollar
The Mexican peso appreciated by 0.41% against the US dollar on Monday, October 5, 2026, trading at approximately 18.09 pesos per dollar. This marks the currency's second consecutive day of gains, recovering from losses recorded in the previous week.
Several factors contributed to the peso's strength. Internationally, the first round of Brazil's presidential elections triggered increased interest in Latin American assets after Flávio Bolsonaro secured 47.25% of the vote against Lula da Silva's 44.90%, necessitating a runoff on October 25. Domestically, Mexico's gross fixed investment grew by 6.6% year-on-year, surpassing investor expectations of 5.6%. This growth was driven by private investment and an 11.5% increase in the import of machinery and equipment.
Despite a general rise in the US dollar index, the peso remained resilient due to moderating US economic activity data and strong Mexican macroeconomic indicators.
