Mexican peso faces volatility amid rising US inflation

The Mexican peso has experienced significant volatility against the US dollar, driven largely by higher-than-expected inflation data in the United States. In September, the US Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.7% annually, exceeding market forecasts and fueling expectations that the Federal Reserve may increase interest rates to combat persistent inflationary pressures.

Following this data, the peso faced downward pressure, at times reaching levels near 18.60 or even exceeding 19.00 pesos per dollar in certain banking branches. This depreciation has raised concerns regarding the potential for increased import costs and subsequent domestic inflation in Mexico.

Market analysts note that the currency's movement is highly sensitive to US macroeconomic dynamics. While the peso saw periods of depreciation, it also experienced slight recoveries as investors monitored upcoming Federal Reserve decisions and producer price indices. The Banco de México has reported official exchange rates reflecting these fluctuations, with the peso hitting some of its lowest levels since late 2025.
