Mexican Peso maintains strength as USD/MXN stays below 17 level

The Mexican peso continues to show strength against the US dollar, maintaining its position below the 17.00 level. As of September 7, 2026, the USD/MXN exchange rate has fluctuated around 16.89 to 16.91 pesos per dollar, reflecting a period of appreciation for the national currency.

Market volatility is being driven by several global factors, including rising US inflation expectations and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East involving the US and Iran. These tensions have pushed oil prices higher, impacting energy markets and broader financial uncertainty. While some analysts expect the peso to depreciate toward 17.50 by the end of 2026, the current trend has been described by some as the return of the ‘super peso’.

In the broader foreign exchange market, other currencies are also seeing significant movement. The Japanese yen has gained approximately 2% following increased bets on a Bank of Japan rate hike, and the Colombian peso has strengthened due to high interest rates and rising oil prices.
