Mexican Peso strengthens as exchange rate stays below 17 per dollar
The Mexican peso has shown significant strength against the US dollar, trading below the 17-peso threshold. As of September 4, 2026, the exchange rate has fluctuated near 16.88 to 16.95 pesos per dollar, marking some of its strongest levels since May 2024.
Several factors are driving this appreciation. Positive macroeconomic data from Mexico, specifically a 5.9% year-on-year increase in gross fixed investment reported by INEGI, has bolstered investor confidence. Additionally, the peso has benefited from a weakening US dollar amid market anticipation regarding the Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions and recent US labor market reports.
Financial analysts remain cautiously optimistic. A recent Citi Expectations Survey suggests a revised year-end forecast of 17.50 pesos per dollar, an improvement from previous estimates. While the peso has seen a weekly gain of approximately 0.80%, markets continue to monitor international volatility, including geopolitical tensions and US monetary policy shifts.
