Mexican peso strengthens as exchange rate breaks below 17 per dollar

The Mexican peso has shown significant appreciation against the US dollar, breaking below the 17.00 threshold. On August 15, 2026, the exchange rate was reported at approximately 17.02 pesos per dollar, according to data from Banco de México and the Diario Oficial de la Federación.

Economic analysis from Gabriela Siller Pagaza of Grupo Financiero Base indicates that the currency reached a yearly low of 16.98 pesos per dollar, a level not seen since June 2024. This movement is attributed to carry trade positions utilizing the Japanese yen and the US dollar as funding currencies, alongside a weakening of the US dollar.

Banking institutions across Mexico show varying rates, with selling prices ranging from approximately 17.03 to 17.79 pesos depending on the bank. The appreciation continues to be characterized by market observers as the 'superpeso' gaining strength in recent sessions.
