Journalist Roxana Guzmán murdered in Veracruz; body recovered and eight suspects arrested

On 2 June 2026 armed men broke into the home of Roxana Berenice Guzmán Ramírez, director of the digital outlet Pulso Informativo del Sureste in Nanchital, Veracruz, and abducted her. The raid was recorded and the video spread widely on social media, highlighting the brutality of the crime.

After weeks of search, authorities located her remains on a ranch in the neighboring municipality of Moloacán on 3 July 2026. Genetic testing confirmed the identity of the journalist, whose body was later handed to her family for a funeral in Nanchital.

Investigations have led to eight arrests: four members of the criminal cell known as Grupo Sombra (also called Mafia Veracruzana) and four active municipal police officers from Ixhuatlán del Sureste accused of providing logistical support to the kidnappers. The suspects include individuals identified by aliases such as “Delta 1”, “Delta 7”, “Delta 11” and “La Hiena”. Federal security secretary Omar García Harfuch said more arrests are expected.

The case has prompted demands for a gender‑perspective investigation from the Mexican Senate, the United Nations human‑rights office, Amnesty International and Reporters Without Borders, citing the high risk to women journalists and the broader climate of impunity in Mexico. Funeral services were held on 6‑7 July 2026 with security presence from the National Guard and state police, and the family received the remains while expressing grief and calling for justice.
