Mexican Senate officials involved in physical altercations and legal disputes

Violence and verbal altercations broke out at the Mexican Senate involving members of the PRI and Morena parties. On August 27, 2025, Senate President Gerardo Fernández Noroña was reportedly confronted and physically accosted by a group of PRI legislators led by national leader Alejandro Moreno “Alito”. The incident occurred during the singing of the National Anthem following a session of the Permanent Commission. Witnesses reported shoving and verbal insults directed at Noroña, as well as an assault on his photographer, Emiliano González.

In a related development, Morena spokesperson Arturo Ávila announced plans to file a civil lawsuit for moral damages against PRI Deputy Carlos Eduardo Gutiérrez Mancilla. The legal action follows an August 12 altercation in which Gutiérrez Mancilla allegedly accused Ávila of arms trafficking. Ávila stated that the accusations are false and have harmed his honorability and that of his family. He emphasized that constitutional immunity does not protect legislators from civil or administrative sanctions and will seek a public apology if the court rules in his favor.
