Mexico Senate official faces backlash over AICM VIP lounge request
Higinio Martínez Miranda, President of the Senate, has distanced the legislative body from a request to grant senators access to the diplomatic protocol lounge at Mexico City International Airport (AICM). Martínez characterized the submission of the request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) as a “garrafal error” (huge mistake) by Daniel Sibaja González, the technical secretary of the Board of Directors.
Martínez asserted that the Board of Directors never reached a collective agreement to seek these privileges and that Sibaja acted beyond his authority. The request, which sought to facilitate travel for legislators during session periods, was officially denied by the SRE. The controversy was brought to public attention by Senator Claudia Anaya, who criticized the attempt to secure preferential treatment.
President Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed the matter, emphasizing a policy of “zero privileges” for public officials. She reminded legislators of their responsibility to the people and stated that the administration's origins are rooted in a social movement that fought against such advantages. The Senate Board of Directors is expected to review the incident in its upcoming meeting.
