Mexican Senator proposes stricter regulation for aesthetic clinics

Mexican Senator Simey Olvera Bautista has proposed a reform to the General Health Law to strengthen the regulation and supervision of clinics performing aesthetic procedures. The initiative follows reports from the Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris), which noted a 3,950 percent increase in the closure of irregular plastic surgery clinics due to deficient sanitary conditions and lack of specialized personnel.

The proposal aims to classify performing medical-surgical procedures without professional training, specialization, or a valid certificate from the Secretariat of Public Education as the crime of professional usurpation, subject to the Federal Penal Code. Additionally, the reform seeks to require informed consent from legal guardians for reconstructive plastic surgeries performed on minors due to accidents, congenital malformations, or health conditions.
