Mexican Senator seeks passport restrictions for child support debtors
Mexican Senator Agustín Dorantes Lámbarri of the PAN party has requested that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) require a certificate of non-registration from the National Registry of Food Obligations (RNOA) for the issuance or renewal of Mexican passports.
The proposal follows 2023 reforms to the General Law on the Rights of Children and Adolescents, which established the RNOA to protect the rights of minors by tracking those who fail to meet child support obligations. Dorantes Lámbarri noted that while the registry was created to ensure the protection of children's rights, the SRE has not yet incorporated the certificate into its mandatory requirements for passport services.
The senator emphasized that the passport is one of several key procedures where such verification should be mandatory, alongside driver's licenses, candidacy for public office, notary procedures, and civil marriage applications.
