US child support debt passport enforcement

Overview

The United States federal government is initiating a new phase of passport revocations scheduled for October 5. This sixth phase targets non-custodial parents with child support debts of $15,000 or more.

This move represents a significant reduction in the debt threshold used for enforcement. Since May, the government has implemented six phases, progressively lowering the requirement from an initial $100,000 down to the current $15,000 level. During the fifth phase in late August, the threshold was $25,000.

Federal authorities have the power to aggregate arrears from multiple cases belonging to a single individual to meet the $15,000 requirement, even if the debts are registered in different states. Officials have advised debtors to verify their case statuses with the Administration for the Support of Minors (ASUME) before the Department of State begins the revocation process.
