Mexican shrimp producers face import threats and seasonal delays

Mexican shrimp producers are facing significant economic challenges due to irregular imports and delays in the fishing season. In Tamaulipas, there is growing concern regarding the illegal entry of foreign shrimp, particularly from Ecuador, which producers claim creates unfair competition. Federal authorities have acknowledged the need to combat shrimp smuggling and are establishing working groups with the aquaculture sector, security forces, and customs officials to increase surveillance.

Adding to these commercial pressures, local fishermen in Tamaulipas are navigating strict conservation measures. The federal government has extended the commercial shrimp fishing ban in marine waters from the U.S. border to the mouth of the Coatzacoalcos River until September 15, 2026, based on technical opinions from the Mexican Institute of Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (IMIPAS).

In the Pacific region, fishermen in Guaymas and Empalme, Sonora, are concerned about potential delays in the start of the shrimp season. Due to late meetings regarding sampling results in the southern Pacific, leaders fear the season may not begin until late September. This delay could disadvantage small-scale fishermen, as shrimp may move to deeper waters and the risk of tropical cyclones increases.
