Mexican State Lawmakers Promote Indigenous Rights and Cultural Heritage

In a press conference, Puebla deputy Elisa Limón Balderrábano of Morena presented her legislative record, noting 21 initiatives and 23 points of agreement aimed at regional development, strengthening agriculture, protecting indigenous peoples, enhancing animal welfare, improving road infrastructure, expanding access to justice, and supporting reforestation. She highlighted a proposal to recognize the Nahua ancestral textile tradition of northeastern Puebla as intangible cultural heritage. Morena Puebla spokesperson Agustín Guerrero Castillo praised the deputy’s activity as reflective of the party’s commitment to social causes and historically marginalized communities.

Separately, Michoacán deputy Belinda Iturbide announced commemorations for the 487th anniversary of the Tenancy of Santa Fé del Río in Penjamillo. She emphasized the importance of honoring the town’s cultural legacy, stating, “Conmemorar 487 años de historia es honrar a las mujeres y hombres que han forjado con trabajo y unidad la identidad de esta tierra.” The planned festivities from June 25‑26 will feature cultural walks, music and dance performances, and showcase the community’s renowned embroidery, wheat bread, and traditional dishes, inviting residents to participate.
