Mexico launches massive hospital expansion and state health upgrades

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a 181 billion‑peso investment to carry out 152 hospital projects by 2030, including 50 new hospitals, 47 expansions and 55 replacements. The plan will raise public‑sector bed capacity from 96 966 to 106 105, adding more than 9 000 beds – the largest growth recorded. Thirty projects have already been completed, delivering 1 474 new beds, while 33 projects under construction are expected to add 1 163 beds, bringing overall progress to about 29 %.

The federal health ministry said construction will accelerate in 2027‑2028, with the IMSS slated to open 21 of its 47 planned hospitals in the next ten months and the ISSSTE to complete 20 construction, rehabilitation or modernization projects during the current term.

At the state level, Tlaxcala Governor Lorena Cuéllar delivered 40 computers, medical supplies, uniforms and vehicles to the State Public Health Laboratory, boosting its material availability from 55 % to 99 % and expanding its facilities. In Morelos, the new Esther Chapa Tijerina Research and Wellness Center was inaugurated, and hygiene training for food‑service providers and free vasectomy camps were launched, underscoring broader efforts to strengthen Mexico’s health system.
