Mexico President Sheinbaum launches $181 bn hospital expansion plan

President Claudia Sheinbaum announced a 181 billion‑peso investment to carry out 152 hospital projects by 2030, including 50 new hospitals, 47 expansions and 55 major replacements. The plan will raise public‑sector beds from 96,966 to 106,105, the largest increase on record. The IMSS will build 47 hospitals in total – seven already operating, 21 under construction and ten set to open within ten months – extending services to states such as Guanajuato, Sonora, Hidalgo, Yucatán and many others. Coordination with state governments adds 121 works in the Eastern Zone of the State of Mexico, backed by more than 75 billion pesos, and includes new facilities like the IMSS General Hospital of Atenco. Regional projects complement the federal effort, for example a new IMSS hospital in Guaymas, Sonora, and ISSSTE upgrades in Quintana Roo. By the end of 2026 the health system expects to have added 2,637 beds, reaching about 29 % of the six‑year target, with accelerated construction slated for 2027‑2028.
