Mexican students advance biotechnology research in US and Mexico

Mexican students are advancing scientific research in biotechnology and bioengineering through international collaborations and regional academic forums.

At the University of California San Diego, Camila Montiel, a Biochemistry Engineering student from TecNM – Tijuana, participated in the ENLACE 2026 research program. Her work focused on detecting and measuring pancreatic digestive enzyme activity, specifically trypsin, in human blood samples. This research aims to develop a rapid, portable, and sensitive device to assist in evaluating pancreatic damage and other critical clinical conditions, such as multi-organ failure.

In Monterrey, students from the Universidad Tecnológica de Coahuila (UTC) presented research at the Northeast Biotechnology and Bioengineering Conference held at Tecnológico de Monterrey. The UTC team showcased projects involving a waterproofing agent made from cactus mucilage and coconut fiber, as well as a nutritional improvement for cookies using crucetillo flour. These presentations highlight the application of biotechnology to address practical problems and foster academic exchange.
