Mexican Supreme Court Grants Legal Personhood to Indigenous Bees

Mexico's Supreme Court (SCJN) approved petitions that recognize melipona bees as legal persons and affirm the legal personality of the Anillo de los Cenotes geohydrological reserve. The decisions stem from Maya communities in Hopelchén, Campeche and Homún, Yucatán, who seek to protect pollinators from industrial pesticide use and to defend their ancestral relationship with the insects. Minister Irving Espinosa Betanzo noted that the case raises “various aspects of how to address the right to a healthy environment.”

The court will also examine an amparo filed by apiculturist Leydy Pech Marín, alleging that federal environmental authorities failed to regulate high‑risk agrochemicals, potentially violating the right to a clean environment and indigenous peoples' cultural and economic rights. The rulings could establish a national precedent for environmental protection and Indigenous guardianship of ecosystems.
