Mexican tequila and mezcal exports exceed US$3 billion
Mexican tequila and mezcal exports reached US$3.015 billion between January and August 2026, marking a 15.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. According to data from Banco de México compiled by the Grupo Consultor de Mercados Agrícolas (GCMA), this growth places agave-based spirits among the most valuable branches of Mexico's agri-food beverage trade.
Despite the rising export value, industry leader Becle, owner of José Cuervo and Tequila 1800, is navigating a complex period. Fitch Ratings predicts that Becle may not see a recovery in organic growth in Mexico until late 2027, following a period of weakened consumption, inflation, and increased competition. While Becle maintains a dominant global position in tequila sales, the company faces challenges in the United States and Canada due to distributor restructuring and shifting demand. Fitch expects Becle's sales to see low single-digit declines in 2026 and part of 2027, though the company's premium strategy and brand recognition remain key strengths.
