Mexican agave and tequila industry trends
Overview
Between January and August 2026, Mexican tequila and mezcal exports reached US$3.015 billion, a 15.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Despite this rising export value, industry leaders like Becle have faced challenges including weakened consumption, inflation, and distributor restructuring in North American markets.
This growth in export value contrasts with a domestic crisis for agave producers. A sharp decline in agave prices has occurred due to overproduction and stagnant demand. President Claudia Sheinbaum reported that prices have plummeted from 30–35 pesos per kilogram to as low as one peso in some areas. The Mexican federal government is currently developing a plan to mitigate the impact on producers, particularly in Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Michoacán, which account for 90% of the nation's tequila agave production.
