Mexican tourist Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán killed after ICE chase in Florida

Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, a 28‑year‑old Mexican from San Luis de La Paz, Guanajuato, was on a tourist visa visiting family in Atlanta before traveling to the Florida coast. On July 14, 2026, after an encounter with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations agents at a gas‑station parking lot in St. Augustine, he fled on foot, ran across a busy highway (SR 16) and was struck by a tractor‑trailer, resulting in his death.

His killing was the third fatal incident linked to ICE encounters within a week, following shootings in Texas and Maine. Mexican officials confirmed his identity, and his wife, Yezzika (Jessica) Alamilla, contacted the farm‑worker advocacy group Colectivo Árbol for assistance. The group bought her a plane ticket, provided lodging, and is helping repatriate his remains to Mexico. A spokesperson for Colectivo Árbol said, "His wife said he was there on a tourist visa. She didn't understand what was happening."

U.S. authorities have not publicly released further details, noting the investigation is ongoing and the fate of the other three occupants of the vehicle remains unknown.
