Mexican women average 34‑46 weekly hours on unpaid domestic work

Data released by the Instituto Mexicano para la Competitividad (IMCO) show that women in Mexico devote between 34 and 46 hours per week to unpaid domestic tasks such as caring, cleaning and cooking. Chihuahua records the lowest weekly average at 34 hours, while Durango and Veracruz have the highest at 46 hours. Baja California, Quintana Roo and the State of Mexico fall in the mid‑range with 36‑38 hours.

Nationally, women performed 3.241 trillion hours of domestic work in the past year, compared with 2.702 trillion hours by men. The unpaid labour is valued at just over 8 trillion pesos, representing about 0.3 % of Mexico’s GDP, with girls contributing 56.8 % of that value. Production of goods for self‑consumption adds another 1.7 % of GDP, split 46.4 % from women and 53.6 % from men.
