Gender labor inequality and unpaid care in Mexico

Reports from July and August 2026 highlight systemic gender labor inequality in Mexico, characterized by high informality, significant wage gaps, and disproportionate unpaid care burdens. UN Women has called for stronger public care systems and policies that recognize care as an economic good, noting that women spend 2.5 times more time on unpaid care than men.

In the textile sector, disparities are acute. While a UN Women-commissioned study found 76% of women in textile manufacturing work informally compared to 53% of men, data regarding textile artisans reveals an even higher labor informality rate of 94%. In the artisan subsector, women earn an average of 3,699 pesos per month, roughly half of the 7,399.5 pesos earned by men. Furthermore, only 2.4% of these artisans have access to health services and social security. Activists are calling for legal reforms to recognize this work as a formal profession to protect indigenous creators and cultural heritage.

Nationwide, IMCO data shows women spend between 34 and 46 hours per week on unpaid domestic tasks, with the highest averages in Durango and Veracruz. Last year, women performed 3.241 trillion hours of unpaid work, valued at over 8 trillion pesos (approximately 0.3% of GDP). These economic pressures contribute to a “cycle of precarisation,” as 45.7% of female-headed households live in poverty.
