Gender labor inequality in Mexico

In early July, a UN Women‑commissioned report released by Mexico’s Institute for Competitiveness documented that none of the country’s 32 states meet optimal labor conditions for women. It highlighted that about 31.6 million people perform unpaid care work, three‑quarters of whom are women, and that 45 % of women of working age are outside the labour market because of caregiving duties. The study pointed to high informal employment, a 12.8 % gender pay gap, limited childcare services and a stark disparity in weekly household hours (35 for women versus 15 for men). UN Women called for stronger public care systems, more equitable parental‑leave policies and broader recognition of care work as an economic good.

A later report in late July narrowed the focus to Mexico’s textile manufacturing sector, revealing that 76 % of women in the industry work informally versus 53 % of men, with 77 % lacking social‑security benefits. Women in the sector average 52 hours of work per week and earn 34.2 % less than men, while also shouldering a larger unpaid‑care burden. The data underscored a “cycle of precarisation” that deepens economic vulnerability, especially for female‑headed households where nearly half live in poverty. Together, the two reports trace a consistent picture of systemic gender‑based labor inequities across Mexico, from nationwide unpaid‑care burdens to sector‑specific informal employment and wage gaps.
