Mexico accelerates competency‑based hiring and AI skill training initiatives
A recent study shows that 70% of Mexican companies struggle to fill vacancies because graduates lack practical problem‑solving abilities. Youth unemployment stands at 5.4%, and 58.8% of young workers are in informal jobs without contracts or social security. In response, Tecmilenio promotes a modular, competency‑based learning model (MAPS/FIT) that certifies specific skills, reports that 54% of participants receive job offers before graduating and 90% secure formal employment upon completion.
In parallel, standards organization BSI has partnered with online platform Coursera to launch a global, on‑demand training program focused on artificial‑intelligence and security skills. The alliance will deliver short, modular courses to help professionals across sectors close critical skill gaps. BSI’s senior vice‑president for the Americas highlighted the aim of making high‑quality, standards‑based training widely accessible, while Coursera’s content director noted its reach of more than 197 million learners worldwide. The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2030 nearly two‑fifths of current employee skills will become obsolete, and 85% of Mexican firms anticipate significant structural changes driven by emerging technologies.
