Mexico addresses human trafficking via digital law and regional enforcement

Mexican authorities and officials are addressing the complexities of human trafficking, specifically focusing on digital environments and regional enforcement. During a working group session, Haydeé Vargas Sánchez of the Fiscalía General de la República highlighted legal gaps in the General Law regarding digital trafficking. She noted that predators use online games, chats, and various digital platforms to recruit children and adolescents by posing as minors. The volatility of digital information and the need for international cooperation to access data stored outside Mexico remain significant challenges for investigators.

In Tlaxcala, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recognized the coordinated efforts between the federal government and Governor Lorena Cuéllar Cisneros to combat the crime. The State Attorney General's Office reported that between 2022 and September 2026, 40 convictions were secured, resulting in a cumulative 1,106 years of prison sentences and significant fines for reparations. Since the beginning of 2026, seven new investigations have been opened as part of ongoing efforts to prosecute trafficking offenses.
