Mexico advances in electric vehicle production and technology

Mexico is strengthening its position in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, particularly through its robust automotive parts industry. Francisco González Díaz, president of the National Auto Parts Industry (INA), noted that while domestic EV usage remains low, the country is highly competitive in production and exports. Mexico serves as a primary supplier of parts to major EV manufacturers in the United States, such as Tesla and Lucid.

Data indicates that Mexico held a 44.73 percent share of global auto part imports to the U.S. in the first half of 2026. To ensure quality and origin, the industry is implementing traceability systems like the German-developed CATENA-X, which tracks materials and energy usage from raw components to finished products.

On the domestic innovation front, the Olinia project has introduced a prototype for the first Mexican-made electric car. This initiative, supported by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, aims to foster technological sovereignty and provide accessible electric mobility solutions for Mexican families.
