Mexico nearshoring-driven sector growth

Recent data reaffirm that nearshoring continues to expand Mexico’s economy across several key industries. The construction sector’s shift toward prefabricated housing now cuts project timelines by up to 40 % and reduces material waste to under 1 %, while still accounting for about 8.5 % of GDP in 2025 and supporting more than 3.8 million jobs. Fifteen firms were recognised in the 2026 Great Place to Work list for strong safety and leadership.

In the State of Mexico, food‑manufacturing firms have invested 8.172 billion pesos domestically and attracted over US$2 billion in foreign capital, creating more than 146 000 jobs across roughly 31 000 companies. In Coahuila, foreign‑direct‑investment auto‑parts projects totalling US$76.2 million added 2 350 formal positions, contributing to a historic US$40.9 billion FDI inflow for early 2025. The hiring surge is straining HR and IT onboarding capacities.

A Banamex analysis shows nearshoring has generated roughly 250 000 additional manufacturing jobs, lifting high‑value sector employment from 1.51 million in 2018 to 1.76 million in 2023 – a 16.6 % rise versus 7.4 % in other manufacturing. These gains are heavily concentrated in the northern border and Bajío regions, which now host about 86 % of nearshoring‑related jobs, with cities such as Ciudad Juárez and Tijuana accounting for nearly a third of national electronic‑sector employment.

Experts warn that water and energy shortages are limiting further expansion, prompting calls to broaden North‑American integration and leverage upcoming T‑MEC reviews to sustain investment momentum.
