Mexico advances regulatory and cultural support for mezcal industry

Legislative and executive efforts are underway in Mexico to strengthen the mezcal industry through regulatory updates and cultural promotion. In Puebla, the State Congress is driving reforms to the NOM-070-SCFI-2016 standard. Organized by Deputy Ana Laura Gómez Ramírez in coordination with the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), a recent forum analyzed updates to the regulatory framework governing spirits with the Mezcal Denomination of Origin. The proposed legislative initiative aims to protect quality, tradition, and the regional value chain to support economic growth.

Simultaneously, the ancestral mezcal from Palpan de Baranda, Morelos, received national recognition during President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo’s morning conference. The presentation highlighted the artisanal production processes used by local masters and the cultural importance of the beverage. This follows the recognition of the Mezcal Denomination of Origin for 23 municipalities in Morelos, an achievement intended to improve commercialization opportunities and support the agave-mezcal production chain.
