JMAS repairs sinkholes and upgrades sewer pipes in Ciudad Juárez

The Junta de Agua y Saneamiento de Juárez (JMAS) launched emergency operations to repair two major sinkholes on Avenida Adolfo López Mateos at the Óscar Flores boulevard intersection and on Avenida Tecnológico at Aguirre Laredo. In both locations a 24‑inch collector that had reached the end of its service life is being replaced with PVC pipe, with sections of 6–10 metres for the former site and about 6 metres for the latter. Traffic coordination with road‑safety officials required the closure of two vehicle lanes and the dedicated bus lane, and JMAS is repaving the streets after the work is completed.

Simultaneously, JMAS is addressing a long‑standing discharge of untreated wastewater into the Rio Bravo. A new 42‑inch collector, part of the “Nadadores” project, is being installed to replace an obsolete 8‑inch pipe that has been overflowing and forcing sewage back into homes. The work involves three active fronts, specialized excavation equipment, and daily well‑point dewatering to manage high groundwater levels. Officials expect the permanent discharge to be eliminated within a month, improving public‑health conditions for roughly 100 000 residents in the sector.
