Michoacán tourism plan secures $300 million investment and targets 4 million visitors

The federal and state governments presented the "Plan Michoacán por la Paz y la Justicia," a multi‑year strategy aimed at making tourism a strategic engine for the state’s development. Between January and April 2026, Michoacán recorded more than 1.2 million hotel‑overnight tourists, a 5 % rise over the same period in 2025, and officials are targeting over 4 million visitors by the end of the year.

The plan backs promotion campaigns such as "Michoacán, Se Vive" and "Michoacán, el Alma de México," with presence at international fairs including FITUR (Madrid), ITB (Berlin), WTM São Paulo and ITB China, as well as tours in Los Angeles. A new Guide of Community Tourist Experiences will catalogue initiatives created by local communities to preserve traditions and generate income.

Infrastructure funding totals 300 million pesos from the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), covering works like the rehabilitation of San Juan Parangaricutiro, improvements to the Janitzio waterfront and digital tourist signage in Pátzcuaro. The first sport‑tourism event under the plan, the Spartan competition, generated more than 32 million pesos in economic impact and attracted 2 200 competitors.

In parallel, 56 community‑tourism projects and 28 traditional cooks in 22 municipalities received equipment grants ranging from 300 000 to 500 000 pesos, including refrigerators, bicycles, tirolesas and quad‑bikes, to enhance visitor services. Federal Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora and Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla highlighted tourism’s role in job creation, cultural preservation and environmental stewardship.
