Mexico signals readiness to restore diplomatic ties with Peru

Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that the country intends to recover its diplomatic relationship with Peru after the Peruvian president‑elect, Keiko Fujimori, expressed a willingness to re‑establish ties. Sheinbaum said, “Sí tenemos intención de recuperar la relación con Perú. Nosotros no rompimos esa relación, la rompieron ellos,” and directed Foreign Minister Roberto Velasco to contact the incoming Peruvian team to discuss the details.

Fujimori replied, “De mi lado habrá toda la intención para poder retomar las relaciones entre Perú y México,” signalling that Peru will seek normalization once she assumes office on 28 July. The bilateral rupture dates back to November 2025, when Peru severed relations after Mexico granted political asylum to former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez and criticized the detention of former President Pedro Castillo. Mexico maintains its position that Castillo's arrest was arbitrary, a view echoed by a United Nations working group.

Despite the suspension of full diplomatic contacts, both nations remain members of the Pacific Alliance and are exploring ways to revive economic, trade and cultural cooperation.
