Mexico and Switzerland to begin negotiations on updated trade treaty

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum and Swiss President Guy Parmelin met at the Palacio Nacional to launch talks on modernising the bilateral trade agreement. Both leaders noted that trade between the two nations reached US$4.272 billion in 2025 and that Switzerland is the sixth‑largest investor in Mexico.

The meeting coincided with the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the upcoming 200th anniversary of the first Swiss consulate in Mexico. The parties reaffirmed shared commitments to peaceful dispute resolution, human‑rights defence, multilateral cooperation and environmental protection. They also highlighted cultural‑heritage collaboration, noting that Swiss authorities have returned 67 Mexican artefacts since 2018, and pledged further cooperation in science and innovation.

Sheinbaum praised Swiss business confidence in Mexico and expressed intent to expand investment in strategic sectors, while Parmelin stressed the importance of deepening ties between two neutral, pacifist nations. The leaders concluded with a friendly note to the Swiss national football team.
