Mexico and United States inaugurate sterile‑fly plant in Chiapas
President Claudia Sheinbaum opened the new Plant for Production of Sterile Flies to combat the cattle grub worm (GBG) in Metapa de Domínguez, Chiapas. The facility, built in 12 months, will produce about 100 million sterile insects each week to control the pest, protect livestock health and support animal‑sanitary measures.
The plant is a binational project between Mexico and the United States, with technical and financial contributions from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and remarks from U.S. Agriculture Secretary Brooke L. Rollins and ambassador Ronald D. Johnson. Officials highlighted the initiative as a model of cross‑border cooperation aimed at safeguarding food security and the cattle industry.
