Latin American Nations Intensify Anti‑Trafficking Campaigns on World Day

On July 30, the United Nations‑designated World Day against Trafficking in Persons spurred a series of anti‑trafficking initiatives across Latin America. In Mexico, the Fiscalía General de la República (FGR) and the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Penales (INACIPE) trained more than 250 public officials and highlighted the need for multidisciplinary approaches, with Maribel Bojorges Beltrán emphasizing permanent capacity‑building. Guatemala’s vice‑president, Karin Herrera, renewed the government’s commitment and promoted the “Corazón Azul” awareness campaign, noting that information and prevention save lives.

Uruguay’s Ministry of the Interior launched the national “No miremos para otro lado” campaign to sensitize citizens to warning signs of trafficking. The Dominican Republic’s Procuraduría General de la República illuminated five monuments in blue to signal its resolve, while also drawing attention to the growing “scam‑linked” trafficking model identified by UNODC. Panama hosted a second national meeting to strengthen inter‑institutional coordination, and Venezuela’s (not reported) regional bodies also took part in awareness actions.
